Experimental Field Creation Project

Experimental Field Creation Project

Research Lead: Kaname Harumoto, Professor, Institute for Datability Science, Osaka University

The Experimental Field Creation Project aims to establish a testbed for evaluating new Life Design Innovation technologies in a real-world setting. In order to achieve this goal, we are developing testbeds both inside and outside the Osaka University campuses.

Osaka University will provide its areas of approximately 50,000 m2 to be used as a Society 5.0 testbed. It is our priority to accelerate and complete this testbed for the Life Design Innovation.

Within Osaka University, we plan to establish the following testbeds:

1. Osaka University Hospital testbed: We are collaborating with Osaka University Hospital and its affiliated hospitals (a total of 10,000 beds for inpatients) to create a hospital network. This network allows us to share and make full use of medical data such as patients’ prescription records, examination results, clinical images and written documents, as long as we have the patients’ consent.

2. Suita campus testbed: On the Suita campus, we are developing a visual sensor network by placing over 100 smart cameras in areas such as hallways, roads, libraries and cafeterias for the purpose of empirical research.

3. Toyonaka campus testbed: On the Toyonaka campus, we are developing a data collection environment in and around the sports ground. For this environment, we are building an information infrastructure including high-speed Wi-Fi connections, power outlets and hot access in order to facilitate the data collection using cameras, range sensors and wearable sensors installed in the environment.

4. New Minoh campus testbed: On the New Minoh campus, we will allocate its two floor spaces including active learning rooms, meeting rooms, entrances and cafeterias in order to support empirical research activities.

In addition to the on-campus testbeds mentioned above, we plan to develop testbeds in areas outside Osaka University, such as EXPOCITY, Panasonic Stadium Suita, and the Hanazono Rugby Stadium.
