ELSI(Ethical, Legal and Social Issues) Research Project

ELSI(Ethical, Legal and Social Issues) Research Project

Research Lead: Atsuo Kishimoto, Professor, Institute for Datability Science, Osaka University

In the ELSI(Ethical, Legal and Societal Issues)Research Project, in cooperation with the Osaka University Institute for Datability Science and legal experts, we will first identify potential ethical, legal and societal issues as well as safety and security concerns related to using sensitive research data. Then, in each stage of the Initiative for Life Design Innovation (iLDi) research projects, we will develop the necessary procedures for responsible data use.

Since our system design follows the “ELSI by design" approach, each project can handle data based on the principles of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI), and each type of project will receive information about the legal perspective (L). In order to make it easier for the researchers to use sensitive research data, we will establish procedure manuals and guidelines for researchers for each type of project covering the legal (L), ethical (E) and societal (S) perspective.
