Overview
Society 5.0 Realization Research Support Project
This project supports research organizations that aim to realize Society 5.0* using information science and technology. By encouraging collaboration across projects and university organizations, we accelerate the implementation of research results in real-world society.
Safe, Secure, and Responsible Utilization of Personal Data
In 2018, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) only selected one project in Japan, Initiative for Life Design Innovation (iLDi) Research at Osaka University for the “Society 5.0 Realization Research Support Project”. Our project uses Personal Life Records (PLR) to improve quality of life (QOL) based on physical, mental, social, and environmental health and to build an exciting future society.
Please visit the first stage website for information about our research activities from 2018 to 2022.
The second stage of the project starts in FY2023. We will establish fundamental technologies, operational frameworks, and rules for the safe, secure, and responsible use of personal data to realize social implementation of the results.
Personal Life Records (PLR)
PLR refers to high value-added personal data proposed by iLDi Research of Osaka University and includes Personal Health Records (PHR), which provide medical and health information, and data on various daily activities such as work/school, diet, and sports activities.
Vision – The Future Society We Aim to Create
How will iLDi Research change the future? In the future, people will be able to monitor their health conditions with sensors and not worry about their health, allowing the roles of hospitals to change. We are diligently envisioning and striving for a future society in which parents can confidently nurture their children without anxiety as they can use an avatar to keep a watchful eye on their children, and elderly people do not feel lonely by engaging in conversations and interacting with robots to enhance their lives.
The Coronavirus pandemic has weakened the relationships connecting people to their workplaces, schools, and communities. In the second stage of iLDi, we will build a society that emphasizes “people-to-people links” as integral connections. It is created by Society 5.0 and is more than a smart society.
Creating innovations using personal data
iLDi collects and utilizes personal data from cutting-edge academic research and implements the results in a responsible manner. Using a mechanism to ensure safe and secure reuse of personal data obtained through academic research, the project will build a data distribution ecosystem in which personal data is linked to new services and products. Hence, value is returned to society and individuals.
In the first stage to realize innovation in a data-driven society, we established a data distribution mechanism (PLR database). The PLR database supports sharing of various high value-added personal data obtained through academic research for research and development in the private sector. We created a data delivery place, MYPLR®. (For more information, see the MYPLR® page.)
The second stage will integrate information system infrastructure, social acceptability, data trading operations, and the establishment of data markets to achieve two objectives. The first is to support responsible and secure handling of medical and health data. The second is to expand system functions for ID linkage and data linkage to connect private and municipal data, increasing the value of data.
Approach – Projects
Our motto is “Health x IoT” creation in collaboration with industry, academia, government, and the private sector. This project promotes “lifestyle” research dedicated to enhancing QOL, “wellness” research to improve mental and physical health, and “edutainment” research to realize enjoyment and learning. We build technologies, which will serve as the basis for a future society in which people can design a shining life (high quality of life) from “human connections” based on physical health, mental health, and social health (communication). Furthermore, we develop science and technology behind data transactions that are acceptable to society.
The second stage promotes the following four projects:
